What to expect when you visit an osteopath for the first time

We follow a process that is proven to deliver the best possible outcome – details are shown below. We offer a free 15 minute free consultation which includes a general chat about your particular issue and your lifestyle. I will also explain a bit about how osteopathy works and how it may help you.

Consultation

The first appointment will last about an hour as we would like to give you a patient information sheet that contains information about us and the treatments we give and it is useful to have some time for you to read this. We will need to collect some contact information from you to register you as a patient and the osteopath will discuss our consent form with you.

The osteopath will then talk with you for 15-20 minutes as it’s important to get accurate information about the current issue, any medical history or medications and your general lifestyle. It’s also a good time to discuss your expectations and answer any questions that you may have.

Examination

Movement is an important part of assessment so please wear clothes you feel comfortable to move in. Some women wear non-synthetic sports attire ie, yoga outfits whilst others are happy to wear gowns that we can provide - whatever you feel comfortable in. This, combined with examination using a highly-developed sense of touch called palpation will enable a working diagnosis to be given.

Treatment

Treatment is mostly hands on and consists of massage and stretching techniques, joint mobilisations and occasionally highly focussed manipulations. However the style of treatment used is always a dialogue and if there are treatments you wish to avoid, we can work to your preferences. If appropriate, you may be given exercises or other lifestyle advice to augment the treatment between sessions.

Follow up

At the end of the first visit, we will discuss any findings that came to light during treatment (there is always some new information found!) and how we both feel it is best to progress. We will endeavour to give an approximate number of treatments required but in real terms, it is extremely difficult to give an accurate number of treatments needed as there are many aspects of your life that have an impact on resolution. Those pertinent to your case will be discussed with you, as well as the reasons why they have a positive or negative affect on your recovery.

All treatments are £35 per session.

The principle of osteopathy is that the wellbeing of an individual relies on the way that bones, muscles, ligaments, connective tissue and internal structures work with each other.
